Background of the Study

Sporting events are significant drivers of tourism and economic activity, attracting participants, spectators, and media personnel. These events often lead to increased demand for accommodation, particularly in host cities. Abuja, as the capital of Nigeria, frequently hosts high-profile sporting events, such as football tournaments and athletic championships. These events present a unique opportunity for hotels to capitalize on increased occupancy rates.

Globally, studies reveal a positive correlation between major sporting events and hotel occupancy rates (Smith & Brown, 2023). However, in the Nigerian context, limited research has been conducted to quantify this relationship. Abuja’s hotels cater to diverse clientele, and during sporting events, they often see a surge in bookings. Yet, challenges such as insufficient infrastructure and fluctuating service quality can hinder the potential benefits of this surge (Adeoye et al., 2024).

Exploring the effect of sporting events on hotel occupancy rates in Abuja is essential for understanding how the hospitality sector can strategically leverage such opportunities to maximize revenue and improve service delivery.

Statement of the Problem

Despite Abuja's status as a hub for major sporting events, the city’s hotels face inconsistent occupancy rates during these events. While some hotels report full bookings, others fail to capitalize on the influx of visitors. This disparity suggests a lack of strategic alignment between the hospitality sector and event organizers. Additionally, insufficient marketing and inadequate facilities during peak demand periods can limit the benefits of increased patronage (Eze & Musa, 2023).

This study aims to investigate the relationship between sporting events and hotel occupancy rates in Abuja, providing insights into how hotels can better position themselves to maximize occupancy during such events.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the impact of sporting events on hotel occupancy rates in Abuja.

  2. To identify challenges faced by hotels in maximizing occupancy during sporting events.

  3. To propose strategies for hotels to effectively leverage sporting events to increase bookings.

Research Questions

  1. How do sporting events affect hotel occupancy rates in Abuja?

  2. What challenges do hotels face in maximizing occupancy during these events?

  3. What strategies can hotels adopt to leverage sporting events for increased bookings?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Sporting events do not significantly impact hotel occupancy rates in Abuja.

  2. Hotels do not face significant challenges in maximizing occupancy during sporting events.

  3. Strategies to leverage sporting events do not significantly increase hotel bookings.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on hotels in Abuja and their occupancy rates during sporting events from 2023 to 2025. Limitations include variability in event sizes and availability of data on hotel performance.

Definitions of Terms

Sporting Events: Organized athletic competitions attracting participants and spectators.
Hotel Occupancy Rates: The percentage of available rooms occupied at a given time.
